Let’s face it. Our fur babies are part of our family and we want them to enjoy vacation with us! More and more destinations, hotels, resorts and campgrounds allow pets than ever before. Here are a few tips to insure a safe and stress free time with your pet.
Before you travel, make sure your fur baby is microchipped in case of separation
Always keep your fur baby on a leash when taking for potty breaks.
If you are traveling by car, keep your pet in the back seat in a harness attached to the seat buckle to help prevent injury if in an accident.
Bring plenty of your pet’s food and medical supplies with you. Especially medications. Make sure you have plenty of your pet’s medication (plus extra) while on your trip. You may not know that if you cross state lines, your veterinarian cannot call in medication for you. You will have to travel to a local veterinary clinic for an exam and refills.
Bring your pet’s rabies tag and certificate as well as any health papers that may be needed to cross state lines.
If you are planning to hike in wooded or minimally populated areas, make sure your pet is current on flea and tick prevention and check for ticks after each hike.
Make sure your pet does not drink from stagnant water puddles.
Keep a basic first aid kit with you for minor scrapes or cuts. A first aid kit may consist of:
Antibiotic ointment
Eye wash/flush
Bandage material
Anti-septic (alcohol) wipes
Clippers/shavers
Nail clippers
Antihistamines recommended by your veterinarian
Always check laws and regulations in state and national parks before bringing your pet with you on an adventure.
Always carry waste bags with you and please always pick up after your pet!
